Scholarships for ex-servicemen's descendants
Scholarships: Posted 18-7-13 Deadline - No Deadline
The Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) is a national independent charity administering tertiary scholarships for children and grandchildren of ex-service men and women. Our scholarship applications open on August 18. AVCAT’s aim is to help the children and grandchildren of ex-servicemen and women to a better future through higher education. Through the help of our generous donors, AVCAT administers scholarships to the children of those who have served our country in peace and war in the Australian Army, Navy and Airforce. Our recipients come from all over Australia and study an enormous variety of courses. At present AVCAT is helping around 180 children with the costs of study. We administer about 70 scholarships a year for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs as well as various ex-service organisations (including RSL and Legacy). Scholarship selection is open to children and in some cases grandchildren of a veteran and is based on need and merit. Applicants can be high-school leavers starting university or current university students and eligible for Youth Allowance hence studying full time.Scholarships are generally paid for three years and are between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. Applications for 2014 open in August 2013 and close on 31 October 2013.

Gap Medics Work Experience placement
Gap year: Posted 18-7-13 Deadline - No Deadline
Combine hospital work experience with a once in a lifetime opportunity with our Australian Summer Special!
I have received this: Are you keen to break into the medical field? We all know that the road to becoming a doctor, nurse, midwife or dentist can be a tough one, but with the Gap Medics Australian Summer Special, students will have the chance to gain work experience that will truly make them stand out from the crowd and break into their dream career. Gaining a place at university or medical school is becoming increasingly more difficult, with more and more students wanting to study towards these rewarding careers. The best thing for aspiring medics to do is to seek out work experience that is not only going to benefit them and their studies, but also grab the attention of the universities they are applying to. Aspiring medics between the ages of 16 -25 can join us this summer on our Australian Summer Special in Thailand or Tanzania from 5th January 2014! Here they will shadow healthcare professionals in a variety of departments, getting a real-life insight into the work of medical professionals in a new and exciting country. No amount of work experience available back home in Australia will measure up! Alongside gaining beneficial work experience, students will be able to get together with fellow Australians and experience everything the amazing destination has to offer. From days spent running around the busy hospital wards, to evenings watching wildlife down by the waterhole or cooking over an open fire with all of the fellow housemates. There are even wildlife safaris and hill-tribe treks to uncover at the weekends for those who are looking for a bit more exploration! Places are limited and are likely to fill up quickly, so students should book early to avoid missing out on this once in a lifetime experience! The cost of a one-week placement is $1,990 (USD), but students can opt to join us for longer if they wish.

RAS FOUNDATION RURAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships: Posted 17-7-13 Deadline - No Deadline
RAS has sent this: Are you a student who is passionate about forging a career that will help strengthen your local rural community? Applications are now open for the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) Foundation Rural Scholarships.Over the last three years the Foundation has awarded 126 Rural Scholarships to students studying at TAFE, university and pursuing apprenticeships. RAS Foundation Executive Officer Jocellin Jansson said the scholarships are aimed at reducing some of the financial challenges rural students often face when it comes to pursuing their education and training goals. “In 2013, a record 49 students were awarded a RASF Rural Scholarship. There is no age limit and students could be studying anything from education, engineering, health, agriculture, business —and anything in between. We are looking for a broad cross section of people who want to make a real contribution to the future of rural NSW,” said Ms Jansson.

Hillston’s Sharni Scott was selected from a pool of over 1,000 applications in 2013. The 23-year-old is the first member of her family to attend university and is currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Education.

“The scholarship is making a huge difference in not only my life, but also my family’s. ‘Thank you’ doesn’t sum up the level of appreciation and gratitude we have towards the RAS Foundation and my scholarship donor,” said Miss Scott.

The RAS Foundation Rural Scholarships offer $5,000 for full-time study and $2,500 for part-time study to assist students from rural areas who in turn are motivated to help build strong and vibrant communities.

Interested applicants are encouraged to visit www.rasnsw.com.au/programs to find out more about the RAS Foundation Rural Scholarships and to complete the online application form.

Applications close 30 September, 2013 and the scholarship recipients will be announced in February 2014.

The RAS Foundation is a philanthropic foundation which seeks to encourage educational excellence and foster vibrant and sustainable rural and regional communities by supporting quality youth and community programs.
