Business Scholarships at CSU

The School of Business is currently offering five $3,000 scholarships ($1k per annum), available to those HSC school leavers who apply for the Bachelor of Business (Marketing) program via PREP. Three scholarships will be offered to those students looking to attend on-campus at Bathurst, and two scholarships for on-campus at Albury. Scholarships for Children of Veterans for 2010

In 2010 the Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) are expecting to give financial assistance for up to 65 students under many different scholarship schemes. All schemes help the selected children in need of the Australian veteran community with the costs of tertiary education. Applicants are considered for all schemes for which they are eligible. Applications open on 18 August 2009. The child or grandchild of a person who has operational service with the Australian Navy, Army or Air Force, or if not has three or more year’s continuous full-time service as a member of the Australian Defence Force. The largest scheme is the Long Tan Bursary funded by the Australian Government. There are 50 new bursaries each year. They are valued at $9,000 each which paid at $3,000 per year for three years. There are selection number targets for each State and Territory. To apply you must be the child of an Australian Vietnam Veteran, be resident in Australia, be entering any year of tertiary study, having not previously received a Long Tan Bursary.The other national schemes are the AVCAT Bursary, the two RSL Scholarships, three Vietnam Veterans’ Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Scholarship and the Defence Force Welfare Association Scholarship. George Quinsey Scholarships directly pay tuition fees for economics, commerce and accountancy studies. There are also regional scholarships. In NSW, there are three from Brisbane Water Legacy covering Gosford/Wyong NSW and two from the NSW TPI Association. Some private donors offer two scholarships to resident NSW applicants. In SA, the VVAA also offers a scholarship.Schemes vary between $3,000 and $5,000 per year each. Some are restricted to location of residence or studies Most require veteran service in Vietnam but others are broader. Most schemes continue payments for later years of study. All scholarship schemes but one pays monthly instalments. That scheme helps with tuition costs for courses in commerce, economics and accountancy. One scheme is for indigenous students doing substance abuse or related studies. For this scheme there is no upper age limit nor a need to be related to a veteran. In addition to the above there is one grant per year to assist an handicapped eligible veteran’s child or grandchild with special extra costs of transition to tertiary studies or employment. UWS to open more clinical schools in NSW

The University of Western Sydney will receive almost $10 million from the Federal Government to establish additional clinical schools at Bathurst and Lismore in regional NSW for UWS medical students. This is in addition to $17.6 million already earmarked by the Federal Government for the UWS Blacktown Clinical School. The new funding will allow the University to establish new training sites for UWS medical students in the Lismore and Bathurst regions and is part of a Federal Government initiative to expand the Rural Clinical Schools program. The first students will have the opportunity to study from mid 2010, and will spend twelve months in these communities.

New university pathway for community welfare stude

Teaching Scholarships for 2010

There are big changes to the 2010 Teacher Education Scholarship Program, which now offers even better incentives to encourage talented students to consider a teaching career. These include increased financial assistance, plus a guaranteed job after graduation. This year, 300 scholarships are on offer for students to train as teachers in maths, science and English and primary or secondary special education. Of these scholarships, 80 are available exclusively for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students to train as teachers in primary or any secondary subject area. Successful scholarship applicants this year will receive: • up to $5,000 annual allowance • a guaranteed job when they graduate • $3,000 when they begin permanent teaching • plus, they may be eligible for the HECS-HELP benefit from the Commonwealth Government. The meeting which was going to be held on Thursday at lunchtime has been postponed until early Week 5 due to two other meetings for Year 12 students also scheduled for before the Trials. I will email you with details of whena nd where I will hold the meeting and hand out all the forms. REMEMBER that the Trial HSC exams will be very important for early entry applications, scholarships applications, your assessment marks and ultimately your ATAR. So good luck, study hard and make them help you get to where you want to go.

Changes-Independent Youth Allowance 7th August

Last call for anyone concerned or affected by the proposed changes to the Independent Youth Allowance to have their voice heard. Submissions to the Senate inquiry close on 7th August with details at the website below. Don’t rely on someone else voicing their concerns. Every case is different and if there aren’t many submissions, the Committee will assume no one cares. THey want to know about: a. the financial impact on rural and regional students who are attending metropolitan secondary schools, universities or TAFE;b. the education alternatives for rural and regional students wanting to study in regional areas;c. the implications of current and proposed government measures on prospective students living in rural and regional areas;d. the short- and long-term impact of current and proposed government policies on regional university and TAFE college enrolments;e. the adequacy of government measures to provide for students who are required to leave home for secondary or post-secondary study;f. the educational needs of rural and regional students;g. the impact of government measures and proposals on rural and regional communities; andh. other related matters.The Committee invites written submissions by 7 August 2009.
